I was craving Fried Fish, so I made this plant-based / vegan version. It is so easy to make and tastes so good. Pair it with some of your favorite veggies and rice. Dip it in some cocktail or vegan tartar sauce. This is great for your next Vegan Fish Fry Party.

Vegan Fried Fish

Equipment

  • Medium deep frying pan

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup vegetable oil (or other plant-based frying oil)
  • 1 can Hearts of Palm drained 6 hearts
  • 2 tbsp Aji Nori Furikake (or crumble dried seaweed snacks)
  • 1 tsp Old Bay Seasoning (or Seafood seasoning)
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder

Batter

  • 1 cup Cornmeal (or Cornmeal Flour)
  • Old Bay Seasoning (or Seafood Seasoning)
  • Garlic Powder
  • red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Instructions
 

Prepare Hearts of Palm

  • Drain the hearts of palm and place of a plate.
    1 can Hearts of Palm drained
  • Fork through the hearts of palms and open them up. It will almost look flakey. Do not cut them open with a knife. The fork will give it a flakey look and texture.)
  • Mix the Aji Nori Furikake, Old Bay Seasoning, and Garlic Powder seasoning with a fork or spoon.
    2 tbsp Aji Nori Furikake, 1 tsp Old Bay Seasoning, 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • Coat the hearts of palm with the Aji Nori Furikake, Old Bay Seasoning, and Garlic Powder seasonings on both sides.
  • Mix the Cornmeal, Old Bay Seasoning, and Garlic Powder. Add red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper to taste on a plate or in a bowl.
    1 cup Cornmeal, Old Bay Seasoning, Garlic Powder, red pepper flakes, Salt, Pepper
  • Place the seasoned hearts of palm in the batter to coat both sides generously.
  • Place the coated hearts of palm on a plate and let rest for 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Place the hearts of palms in the frying pan to fry until golden brown. (Usually about 2 minutes. Do not over cook them so they do not get burned.)
    1 cup vegetable oil
  • Use a spatula to remove the hearts of palm from the frying pan and place them on a plate with a paper towel so they can drain the oil.
  • Enjoy with your favorite cocktail or vegan tartar sauce.
